Christophe - Le avventure di un pellegrino tra Medioevo e Rinascimento

Da Canterbury a Roma, lungo la Via Francigena, si svolge la saga di una famiglia di scultori normanni, alla ricerca della propria identità. Martin, figlio illegittimo di un alto dignitario della corte inglese e apprendista alla Cattedrale di Rouen trasmette al figlio Christophe tutta la fede, la cultura e quel desiderio irrefrenabile di bello e di giusto appreso in convento.

Christophe si arruola nell’esercito popolare di Jeanne d’Arc e la segue fino a Compiègne. Impotente assiste al processo farsa che porta alla condanna al rogo e, disgustato, intraprende il grande pellegrinaggio per appellarsi al Papa. Tra avventure e incontri di ogni tipo, subendo soprusi e risollevandosi con grande determinazione, prosegue con due amici incontrati lungo il cammino.

Resta un ultimo ostacolo da superare: il conflitto interiore tra la ricerca della bellezza e la verità di sé. Nel viaggio di ritorno, Christophe rimane affascinato dai mutamenti artistici epocali che si stanno sviluppando a Firenze e si lascia convincere a rimanere a bottega dal Brunelleschi. Ingenuamente, pensando che il compito della sua vita sia legato al suo nome, riprende il viaggio con il crocifisso da lui scolpito, sulle spalle.

Stare alle circostanze lo porta infine alla sua personale decisione esistenziale.

From Canterbury to Rome, along the Via Francigena, unfolds the saga of a family of Norman sculptors in search of their identity. Martin, the illegitimate son of a high-ranking English court official and an apprentice at Rouen Cathedral, imparts to his son Christophe all the faith, culture, and the irresistible desire for beauty and justice learned in the convent.

Christophe enlists in Joan of Arc’s popular army and follows her to Compiègne. Helplessly, he witnesses the farcical trial that leads to her condemnation at the stake. Disgusted, he embarks on a great pilgrimage to appeal to the Pope. Enduring hardships and encountering various people along the way, he continues with two friends he meets during his journey.

One last obstacle remains: the internal conflict between the pursuit of beauty and self-truth. On the return journey, Christophe is captivated by the epochal artistic changes unfolding in Florence and is persuaded to stay in the workshop of Brunelleschi. Naively believing that his life’s purpose is tied to his name, he resumes the journey with the crucifix he has sculpted, carried on his shoulders.

Ultimately, circumstances lead him to his personal existential decision
